Beirut (no, not the war torn city)…

I’ve been listening to a bit of Beirut lately. They’re an american band that we were lucky enough to see as a support act last year when we went to see Calexico at The Roundhouse in Chalk Farm. They play quite a different kind of music – very full of sound and interesting to listen to. One of the things that amazed me when we saw them live was the number and range of instruments they had on stage at any one time. I think there were 7 of them on stage playing at one time or another the following instruments:

  • Eukelele x 3
  • Mandolin
  • fiddle x 2
  • Guitar
  • baritone sax
  • tuba x 2
  • trumpet x 3
  • Clarinet
  • Xylophone
  • Drums
  • tambourine x 2
  • Cello
  • Keyboard
  • vocals x 2

While the lead singer wasn’t a terribly big bloke, he had a spectacular voice – very deep and strong.

I’d recommend checking them out if you get the chance – especially live.

Ahhh… The Simpsons…

Season 13 Episode 6

Millhouse: I didn’t know your dad was so interested in science

Homer: Science??

Bart: Aaahh – he didn’t say science, he said pie pants

Homer: mmmmmmm….pie pants…..

And Homer said to Bart….

(when Bart was getting kicked out of school and moving to another…)

And if you get kicked out of that one you’re going straight in the army where you’ll be sent to America’s latest military quagmire….where will it be? North Korea? Iran? Anything’s possible with commander kookoo bananas in charge

What is nationalism??

An interesting opinion piece from The Age about the current situation in the middle east, dual citizenship, and the concerning level of blind nationalism that is arising in Australia.

What’s going on in Lebanon?

A well written opinion piece from The Age regarding the rest of the world, and particularly the main humanitarian body’s reaction to what is going on in the middle east…
